Tremendous Cricket Tour for the Boys

The joint cricket tour with Glebe House Prep returned on Wednesday. Six boys from our School joined forces with eight boys from Glebe, which enabled both Schools to offer the opportunity of a tour. The boys had a wonderful time and played extremely well in both of the matches that they took part in.

On the first day we traveled to Great Ballard school in West Sussex. A beautiful venue for our first Match, set among rolling Countryside, with far reaching views to the sea from the pitch. The boys started the Match really well and played some nice defensive Cricket, with Edward George soaking up the early pressure from Great Ballard’s better bowlers. When Harry Challen and Piers Henderson got into bat they were able to push the ball around the field, scoring many fours. By the end of inning’s the team had notched up 129 runs in the eighteen overs they faced. Some great bowling by Clark and Ethan helped the team take some Wickets and led to the opposition finishing on 113 runs.

The boys enjoyed an evening swim in the sunshine and a game of football, before having dinner and heading for bed, after a very successful first day.

The second day started early, with the boys looking forward to shooting each other and their teachers during the mornings paintball activity. Having arrived the teams were divided up, with Downham playing against Glebe. The Downham boys worked together really well and alongside their teachers, they won all three games. A lot of fun was had by everyone, with the boys from each school getting along really well and playing the games in a great spirit.

A quick change of clothes and the team set off for the next match at Windlesham Prep School. Turning into the driveway, the boys were instantly impressed by the grounds and a school building that looked like Downton Abbey. After a nice lunch the boys began their second match, with Windlesham batting first.

From the off it was clear that they were a very good side, which would prove harder to beat than Great Ballard. At one point the wickets were tumbling and the boys had Windlesham rattled, the score being 46 for 6. However the next pairing were very good and scored over 70 runs between them. After 25 overs Windlesham finished on 164 runs for 8 wickets. The boys knew they had a tough task ahead and whilst they tried hard to score, Windlesham kept taking wickets with some excellent bowling and fielding. The team finished on 58 runs all out. It was a brave performance against a side that hadn’t lost a match all year.

On the final day of the tour, the team stopped off at Thorpe Park on the way home. A lot of boys were extremely excited to go on all the thrilling rides, whilst others couldn’t wait to go to KFC! All of the lads found rides and activities they enjoyed and their time in the park ran out all too soon.

The tour proved to be a great success, not just from a sporting perspective but also from a social one too. With the two groups bonding really well and having a lot of fun and laughter along the way and making memories that they will cherish. Thank you to the parents that came and supported their children and to everyone that contributed to the tour.
